Cutting Garden Zinnias and More
When we moved to the orchard property full time a few years ago, one of the first things we did was plant both a vegetable garden and a flower cutting garden. The gardens have changed from year to year, but the perennials, zinnias, bachelor buttons, and few other favorites have always found a place in the garden.
Challenges
Maybe because we have finally gotten the irrigation systems dialed in, or maybe because I spent more time there due to staying home because of COVID-19, the gardens seemed to thrive... at first. Then the hottest, longest heatwave hit. I mean days and days over 100°. Next came the surrounding fires and days and days of smoke keeping us inside. I'm here to say that the gardens now look as battle weary as I feel by it all. Maybe after an extra good soaking, a little extra care, and some sunshine, they'll perk up.

Fortunately, I photographed many of the flowers while they were thriving in the cutting garden. From macro to still life, they are the most cooperative subjects! So grateful to have these gardens to enjoy, tend, and photograph especially during these days of the pandemic.
