Howling Dog | Bandon | northern California photographer

It's easy to see how people can be confused about thinking the rock formation known as Howling Dog is the Wizard's Hat. The tall rock stack on the left in the first image does in fact look like a witch's hat. Or in this case, Wizard's Hat. When in fact, it is Howling Dog.  But the thing is, you have to view the stack from the opposite direction in order to see the dog.In my previous post, I mentioned meeting photographer Steven Michael. Trust me. Steven knows all things Bandon and so many other Oregon locations as well. Steven is the one who showed me the rocks that make the Wizard's Hat formation. He's also written about the confusion of these two stacks. In the second image taken from the south looking toward the north, you can see the dog with his nose facing the sky as if howling at the moon. Legend has named him Komax. I'm happy just to call him Howling Dog.

There is pleasure in the pathless woods, there is rapture in the lonely shore, there is society where none intrudes, by the deep sea, and music in its roar; I love not Man the less, but Nature more.

~ Lord Byron
