Still Life Photography Basics

Many people find still life photography difficult to approach. So, in my Life Exposed still life photography workshop and retreat held earlier this month (October), we started with still life photography basics. Once you understand the basics and begin using the techniques, you can then begin to build on those skills. In the introductory lesson, we review the basics and look at examples in the handbook. Afterwards, I modeled what it was that I wanted the attendees to do. By setting up a still life and photographing it, they saw what to do. Then the attendees were off to create a very simple set-up while keeping the still life photography basics that were covered in mind. While they were setting up, I was able to circulate among the them to answer questions and offer suggestions. Here are a few of the images that I created for the still life photography basics lesson. Using one of my favorite flowers, a white dahlia from my own flower garden, she is the simple subject. You'll be seeing more of her for sure!
