Autumn Views in Lassen Volcanic National Park

Last October, I held my annual one-day Waterfalls Workshop in Northern California. It’s a day of photographing waterfalls, learning techniques, meeting new friends, and enjoying just being in the mountains. It’s a gorgeous time of year with the color change. Several of the workshop members decided to stay to photograph and enjoy the area for another day. Thinking this was a fabulous idea, I decided to stay as well to enjoy the autumn views in nearby Lassen Volcanic National Park.

Lassen Volcanic National Park is one of the least visited national parks in the US. For me, I think this is kinda wonderful. The crowds are not too bad so I can really enjoy the park and photograph different areas without the complication of unwanted people in my photos. Don’t get me wrong. I think everyone should visit and enjoy our national parks as much as they can. But, there is that little selfish part of me that likes having it to myself. It’s a conundrum for sure.

Entering the park on the west side brought me to Manzanita Lake and some beautiful golden fall color. I managed to photograph a couple of lovely reflections in the lake and a ‘peeking through’ image.

As I drove through the park enjoying the amazing landscape views, I noticed a most unusual (to me) appearance to the trees. From a distance they almost looked like they were covered in ash. I could see that it wasn’t snow on them, and there was no snow on the ground. As I got closer I discovered that it was frozen moisture, frost, that was covering the trees. Near Lake Helen, it was also on the ground and bits of vegetation growing between the rocks. As the mist moved across the lake, it became frozen and stuck to the surrounding area.

Now you have another location to put on your bucket list!
