Bowling Ball Beach - no one mentioned the critical element of tide level

The boulders at Bowling Ball Beach look like the name implies - bowling balls. These incredible rocks are located at the northern end of Schooner Gulch State Beach. As with many unique locations, parking can be a challenge here unless you're willing to walk a bit and climb down the short cliff.

Beach Weather

There was high fog there the evening I arrived to photograph this beach. I had planned to be at Bowling Ball Beach about 30 minutes before sunset. But because of the fog a beautiful sunset was not going to happen. I didn't care. I had found the beach, made my way down the challenging cliff, and blah weather was not going to stop me from shooting. (See my post on photographing in Ugly Weather.) Plus there was only one couple with their dog and small child there. I basically had the entire beach to myself!

Tide Level

What I really hadn't planned for was the tide. If the tide is too high, the boulders are completely covered under water. If the tide is too low, there's nothing but rocky, sandy beach surrounding the rocks. Not so pretty. Luckily, I had about 15 minutes to photograph these amazing rocks, before the tide got any higher. Plus, I wanted to make sure I was up off the beach before it got too dark since the trail was unfamiliar and a bit precarious. Next time, I'll take a friend and hopefully hang around for some night photography there during low tide.Bowling Ball Beach, CaliforniaBowling Ball Beach, Californiabowling ball beach, californiaBowling Ball Beach, California
