Night Photography - Santa Cruz Boardwalk

Remember this one?! I think it's time to get back out for a little night shooting! Here's a repost from a couple of years ago:What better place to photograph at night than the Santa Cruz Boardwalk?! Recently, I've been particularly obsessed with night photography. But, I'm finding it difficult to get out late at night to photograph. (The Milky Way is huge on my list!) So, while I was visiting the coast in Santa Cruz recently, two friends and I ventured out to the Boardwalk both during the day (Lensbaby on the Boardwalk) and again late in the evening for some low-light landscape photography.

Night Photography

When shooting at night, pushing your ISO is a given. So, a bit of digital noise in the images is to be expected. I've included my settings in this post so you can see that as the evening progressed, so did my ISO settings. Good ways to deal with getting the right exposure in low light include these tips.

Tips

~1  Of course, one tip is raising your ISO and embracing whatever digital noise may result.  I like to use Lightroom/Photoshop or some of the other programs out there to reduce some of the noise in post-processing.  You can also use the anti-noise setting in camera if your camera has one.~2  Also, keep the aperture wide open if the scene allows. If the point of focus is in the distance, having your aperture wide doesn't greatly compromise the focus of the image.~3   Slowing down the shutter will also help providing you have a steady hand or a little blur is acceptable. Because there is a lot of movement that I wanted to convey on the Boardwalk, a bit of blur was fine with me.

I really hope you'll give night photography a try!
