We Went for the Eagles | Northern California Nature Photographer

Bald eagles were not the only wildlife we saw. Yes, we went for the eagles, but we saw so much more.

I was inspired to seek out and photograph bald eagles during the winter months when they were known to be seen in Northern California. Given that their numbers were in jeopardy a few years ago, it is so rewarding to know that efforts to assist improving their numbers has been successful. A bit of research and phone calls to the area indicated that we would not be disappointed; that, indeed, the eagles now regularly migrated to the area during the coldest of months.

I was hopeful to observe them catching fish over the lake, or seeing them spar with one another. But, I did not witness either of those behaviors. Instead, I saw them perched and scouting the area for potential prey. It was cold and had snowed in the area, so it seemed they were conserving energy for an actual hunt/kill.

I’m always amazed at how large they are. How majestic they appear in flight. And, how they seem to command their territory. They are definitely worthy subjects and I will continue to pursue photographing them.
