Glacier Bay NP, Alaska - Landscapes & Wildlife

For more years than I can remember, I have wanted to visit Alaska. Seems like a reasonable desire, yet over the years different events prevented that from happening. And, there is always the planning - what area to visit, when can I squeeze it in, how will I travel there, and the questions go on. Finally, this summer, everything aligned and I was able to not only visit part of Alaska, I did it with a photography workshop aboard a vintage 1929 boat/ship, the David B.

The David B is piloted by Jeffrey and Christine of Northwest Navigation Co. who partnered with Matt Meisenheimer Photography of Backcountry Journeys to create a once-in-a-lifetime experience for photographers or, really, for anyone. Click the links to find out more about this experience as well as other trips.

Our home for the next week, the David B.

Our trip aboard the David B concentrated on the Glacier Bay NP area. That’s one more national park added to my bucket list of visiting as many national parks as I can.

Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska

Where to begin with this story? I flew to Juneau and boarded the David B to begin this amazing experience. There were ten of us in total. Six participants, one photo leader, one night watchman, and two captains/pilots. On the first day we traveled to Swanson Cove with the intention of anchoring and spending the night there. Each day we traveled to amazing locations full of photography opportunities, and each night we anchored for the night in a beautiful, quiet cove.

While traveling to Swanson Cove we saw numerous waterfowl and marine animals. Perhaps the most special of that very first day was a sighting of a sperm whale. She stayed along the surface of the water for awhile, blew, and dove repeatedly. She was spectacular! Sperm whales have a blowhole angled toward the left, and are deep divers staying below the surface sometimes for an hour. Apparently sperm whales are not often seen in the Glacier Bay area, so this sighting was quite exciting!

Thar she blows!

Time for a deep dive.

Majestic bald eagles seemed to be everywhere.

The fire weed was in full bloom.

Setting sun over Swanson’s Cove as our first day came to an end in Glacier Bay.
