Macro Photography in the Redwoods
Where ever we go in nature, there are photography subjects everywhere. Some are grand landscapes, while others might be tiny macro subjects. The redwood forests of Northern California are bursting with opportunities for both of these and everything in between. If you’ve never experienced the majestic redwood trees, you are in for a treat when you join Amy Ames Photography and me for our photography workshop this spring. We are both experienced workshop leaders, tour guides, and photography mentors. Amy and I will lead you to these locations and help you achieve the photos you desire. We’ve planned this workshop/retreat to coincide with the lupine and rhododendron bloom in Redwood National Park. Although we cannot guarantee it (but our timing should be perfect!!!), the mixture of fog and sunlight create the most incredible conditions.
So, join us with your wide angle lens, your long lens, your macro… just bring it all if you can!

This time of year can be so hectic with the holidays quickly approaching. But, every year I try to plan ahead so that I have some beautiful, fragrant blooms to enjoy during winter. I decided to spend a little 'me' time planting some narcissus bulbs (also known as paperwhites) in glasses to force them to bloom inside. It's a project I do annually usually in mid-October.
Fresh in my garden, bachelor buttons self-seed every year. They make beautiful subjects for still life when fresh or dried.

Late May and early June are the months in which the rhododendrons bloom in the Redwood National Park in northern California. So, a few years ago we planned accordingly and made our way there in early June.

It’s time to say ' farewell, November ' and jump into December. So, it was nice to enjoy a quiet morning. When I got up to refill my coffee, I opened the blinds and saw the best thing ever! FOG!
During the hot summer days in the Central Valley of California, there is sure to be fog along the coast. Last month along the northern California coast, Sue-Meg State Park proved to attract a bit of sun, but the redwoods of the Prairie Creek area remained a foggy forest. Fog in the trees is the great separator, revealing the layers of the forest.
While attending a lifestyle still life photography workshop in August of 2018 in Maine, we were treated to a morning of exploration at the local flower farm, Shaky Barn Farm Gardens. Found still life opportunities met us at every turn.

After a cup of coffee and a morning walk, my days continue in the garden with watering, weed pulling, filling the bird feeders, and generally enjoying the sights and sounds of the morning. The flower garden has become somewhat of a still life garden full of possibilities for photography subjects. I suppose that is true of the vegetable garden as well. I often use some of the blossoms from the still life garden as accents within the still life images I'm creating.

After much discussion, planning, exploring, and scouting, my good friend, Amy Ames Photography and I are holding a photography workshop/retreat/adventure on the Central California Coast which includes Big Sur, Pacific Grove, Monterey, Point Lobos, and surrounding areas! Mark your calendars for this February for an amazing adventure on the Central California Coast.
While visiting the central coast, we went on a little Monterey Bay Walk-and-Shoot. We stayed mostly in the Pacific Grove area, and there was plenty to see. Have you ever tried to capture the waves when they are making just the right action you want to capture? It's tough! You have to anticipate what the water is going to do. Needless to say, I had plenty of images to choose from when it came to water patterns as the waves spilled over the rocks. Then we ventured down to the wharf.

As summer has officially come to an end, and fall is here, there are a few blossoms that are still putting on a show. These cheery cutting garden zinnias seem to last long into autumn and I’m definitely not sad about that!

The first one-day Waterfalls Workshop in Northern California was presented by Nadeen Flynn Photography in March 2022. Many topics of landscape photography were presented including composition, use of a polarizer and filters, camera settings, and desired outcomes. Plan to join in the next Waterfalls Workshop in Northern California this fall, October 22, 2022, when the leaves will be putting on their autumn show.

A very popular subject for still life photography is food. In fact, many people would consider food photography a genre of its own. And, I can see why.
