We Went for the Eagles | Part 2, Northern California Nature Photographer
I was inspired to seek out and photograph bald eagles during the winter months when they were known to be seen in the very northern part of California. Given that their numbers were in jeopardy a few years ago, it is so rewarding to know that efforts to assist improving their numbers has been successful. A bit of research and phone calls to the area indicated that we would not be disappointed; that, indeed, the eagles now regularly migrated to the area during the coldest of months.

Although our expectations were not quite met as far as the abundance of eagles, there was plenty to photograph. A wonderful (!) snowstorm occurred on the only full day we were there. Wet and windy, that did not stop us. We took full advantage of our location and carefully drove to various areas searching for eagles, finding other wildlife and beautiful landscapes.
Enjoy a great day, and get out there and do a little ‘naturing’ today!

Autumn! Like many of you, it's my favorite time of year. After a warm summer (okay, HOT), the cooling temperatures are welcome. Crisp mornings and cool evenings with lovely, comfortable days. They're the best! But those changing colors are what I really look forward to in fall.

Loon parents are very protective! These fascinating birds exhibit a strong sense of commitment and protection towards their offspring, showcasing intricate strategies to ensure the survival and well-being of their young ones. From prioritizing the feeding of their chicks, to the protection from predators and other loons, loon parents face many challenges and are dedicated to their young.
Have you noticed how some photographers create sunbursts (also called starbursts, not to be confused with the candy!) in their images to enhance the feeling and elevate the image a bit? It just seems to add another dimension of interest to the image. I use this technique from time to time in my landscape work. Here are some pointers for you.
Observing the loon care for their chicks was fascinating. Known for their haunting calls and striking black and white plumage, common loons are iconic waterbirds found in North America. These incredible birds exhibit remarkable behaviors during the nesting season, especially when tending to their chicks.

Common loons, known for their haunting calls and striking black-and-white plumage, are iconic waterbirds found in North America. Their fascinating behaviors during the breeding season, particularly in caring for their chicks, offer a glimpse into the intricate dynamics of avian family life. Unfortunately for me, we do not have many loons in Northern California near where I live.
Bald eagles hunting midshipmen in Washington showcases a captivating interaction between predator and prey in the Pacific Northwest ecosystem. The majestic bald eagle, a symbol of strength and freedom, exhibits remarkable hunting prowess as it targets midshipmen fish in the waters of Washington.
From the first time I heard the call of loons on a nature program on TV, I was captivated! The calls of the loons seem a bit forlorn, mysterious, and a somewhat haunting. I wanted to see, hear, and photograph them in person. British Columbia was just the place!

Small or huge, there are gorgeous waterfalls everywhere! Some may be a bit hidden or secluded requiring a hike in order to view them. But, each has its own personality and allure. There are so many waterfalls to explore and photograph.
Nesting on power poles might not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking about birds building their homes, but for ospreys, it's a common occurrence that showcases their adaptability and resilience in the face of changing environments.
When we planned our trip to Montana/Wyoming in early May there were a few things we expected. We expected to see bison, maybe coyotes, beautiful scenery, and hoped for bears and other animals. We expected the weather to be chilly. And, we planned to stay in a comfortable hotel, eat good meals, and DRIVE A LOT! We didn’t expect to see the amazing Harlequin Ducks in Yellowstone NP. Thanks to our guide, we did!

Several summers ago was a whirlwind. And, it all started with a trip to North Carolina to visit and photograph with my friends Kathy Roberts and Jennifer Carr. Kathy opened her beautiful home to us and created a photographer's dream schedule for us beginning with Roan Mountain on our first full day there.
One of the most enchanting aspects of spring is the opportunity to witness new life in the form of baby animals. From fluffy chicks to playful calves, the sight of these adorable babies in spring never fails to bring joy and wonder to our hearts.
The beach is one of my favorite landscapes to visit and to photograph. I've been shooting there since I first began learning photography. Here are a few recommendations for things I've learned about photographing at the beach.
There is a small greenbelt area in the center of a little town near where I live. As I was driving down the Main Street, I noticed a rookery in a large tree near the center of the greenbelt. It was full of great egrets and great blue herons as well as a few other smaller birds. I was so surprised to see them, but they have apparently adapted to city life. When I returned a few days later I was able to capture the snowy egrets’ courting ritual and nest building.
A few years ago, I joined my friend in Mount Rainier National Park to reconnect with nature and photograph all the beautiful scenery that the park has to offer. But, we especially wanted to photograph the wildflowers. The season for wildflowers in Mount Rainier National Park typically begins in mid-July and extends through August, providing ample time to witness nature's incredible spectacle.

From time to time, I like to set goals. From time to time, I like to accomplish them, such as the goal of visiting every National Park in the USA. Currently, there are 63. There are also National forests, National Seashores, National Monuments, and other ‘national’ locations, libraries, artifacts, etc. to which I’v been. But, my main goal is the parks. I have visited and photographed 24 of them. So, yes, I have a ways to go. What better time than this week - National Park Week, April 20 - 28, 2024 to share with you.
At first sight, the Alabama Hills landscape appears chaotic, full of lines and textures, and as with many new areas there is a feeling of ‘Where do I begin?” as you take it all in. This was my second visit to the area so at least this time, I had an idea of what a few of the photography possibilities were and where to go to achieve them.
Making the drive to a tulip garden, I was eagerly anticipating photographing them. I think Spring is finally arriving in Northern California and so too is tulip season. Tulips in fields, gardens, or vases, it doesn’t really matter to me. I love them all.
Manzanar Relocation Center is one of ten ‘internment’ camp locations of the 40’s after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and thus pulled us into WWII. Immigrants and CITIZENS of the USA with Japanese heritage were all required to leave their homes and belongings.
I was especially enthused about this visit to Death Valley because of the appearance of Lake Manly which is in some years a dried lake bed full of mud cracks and salt patterns. Beautiful in their own right. But, the occurrence of a hurricane last fall created a wealth of water in the Valley, and so Lake Manly came to life once again as it does so periodically.

One early, foggy morning before anyone else was up, I decided to go down to the beach to enjoy the environment and take a couple of landscape photos just to document being there. Coffee, beach chair, and camera in hand, I headed over the dune toward the waters’ edge. That's when I knew I'd be photographing shorebirds!
